Northeastern Nevada is Beautiful Country
This is an area for remote adventure. The California Trail that carried settlers out west traveled right through this part of the state. With stretches of wide open land and multiple mountain ranges, this is wild western country. There are areas where you can view ancient artifacts and petroglyphs, as well as ghost towns and old mining camps. Much of the area has wide open vistas and mountain views. And because the Bureau of Land Management owns so much of the land in Nevada in a checkerboard configuration, there is an abundance of open, usable space that will never be built.
A cultural center for the Basque community and jumping-off spot for all kinds of outdoor activities, the city of Elko has a lot of things to see and do. In town, visit the Western Folklife Center to explore the cultural heritage of the American West. Out of town, the South Fork, Wildhorse, and Ruby Mountain State Recreation areas are destination areas for camping, boating, and fishing. Go skiing, hiking, golfing – or try out a dude ranch! Take a drive on the Scenic Byway through Lamoille Canyon winds through the Ruby Range, often called the Alps of Nevada.
A little community serving the area’s residents, Montello is near the Utah border. North of Montello is the Winecup Gamble Ranch, which is a hunting and fishing destination, including the premier trout destination of the Crittenden Reservoir.
With an authentic 1800’s wild west commercial district, and the Emigrant Trail Interpretive Center, Wells is a place to experience some of the days of early settlement. Be sure to be there for the annual Old Town Street Dance and the state’s second biggest car show. Angel Lake, only 12 miles south, is a popular fishing, hiking and camping destination.
West Wendover and Wendover, Utah
Here is where you’ll find the Bonneville Salt Flats, where world land speed records have been set for nearly a century. Also worth visiting is the historic Wendover Airfield Museum, a former World War II bomber training base. And just over the border in Utah are the Sun Tunnels, an art installation of massive scale.
